Day 13 – Shopping for essentials in Manchester! 🛍️🛍️🛍️

Hello, Readers!

I was pretty busy arranging the boxes for student ambassadors these few days! Hopefully you noticed a few student ambassador team leaders face around in our oumorientation facebook page (UoM orientation facebook) recently. It is always a good thing to get to know people around in Manchester prior your arrival so that you can approach someone if you need any help. Being in a new environment on your own can be a real challenge, especially for those who travelled from another country.

In the previous post, I mentioned about how easy it is to get essentials in the UK, and in this post, I would like to let you grasp the idea of what is it like to shop in Manchester.

Firstly I will list down the top 10 essentials that we need to get as a student:

  1. Bed Linen
  2. Wash Kit (body towel & face towel)
  3. Hangers
  4. Crockery Set (cup, bowl, plate)
  5. Utensil Kit (knife, fork, spoon)
  6. Cooking Kit (pot, pan, ladle, spatula
  7. Kitchen linen (kitchen towel, oven mitten)

Based on my first-year experience, I will roughly list down the prices for you so that you can gauge the amount you will need for shopping:

For bed linen, you can order them from accommodation website for £20, which includes a pillow, a duvet, a sheet, a pillowcase and duvet cover.

For wash kit, you can get it from Primark for £7.30, which includes a hand towel, 3 face towels, and a body towel) (Primark bathroom set)

For hangers, you can get it from Wilko for £1 (8 hangers) (Wilko Hangers)

For cutlery, you can simply get it from Wilko as well at a price of £5 and this is for 4 sets of knife, spoon, tea spoon, and fork! You can share it with 3 other friends for a price of only £1.25 for each set (Wilko Cutlery)

For pots and pans, you can get them from Argos at a price of £19.99 which includes 3 saucepans and 2 frying pans (Argos pan set)

For kitchen towels and oven mitten, you can simply get it from Poundland shop for £1 each (Poundland oven glove and tea towel)

By adding up all the costs above, you will get a total of £51.54.

The shops mentioned above can be found in the city centre, mostly inside of Arndale.

Last but not least, I would like to promote a free lucky draw run by Great British Mag (GBMag) where you will get a chance to win a box of goodies worth £187 as shown in the background picture of this post. Just click on this link (Prize Draw) and register, then you will enter the prize draw! Why buy it when you can get it for free? ( ͡º ͜ʖ ͡º)

Hope this post will help out our dear new students coming to Manchester, see you in the next post! ❤
